`Ichiro-zu` [Painting of a Straight Road] by Kondo Koichiro

About the artwork:

This artwork depicts a man herding his cattle home underneath the moon-lit sky. The man is chasing the herd of cattle from behind, carrying a whip and wearing what seems to be a straw raincoat. The moon shines from between the clouds as if indicating the way home.

The ability to express in one colour that the clouds and the moon are floating calmly in the sky, and that the herd is rushing home down the path, is perhaps unique to Koichiro, who demonstrates a masterful control of the ink.

Artist: Kondo, Koichiro (1884-1962)

Koichiro was a nihonga [Japanese-style] painter.
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, his name at birth was Kou. He also painted under the names `Tsukushi-kyo` and `Kakuchusai`.

In Meiji 43 [1910] Koichiro graduated from a seiyo-ga [western-style painting] course at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko [Tokyo Art School]. In the same grade as him were notable artists Tsuguharu Foujita and Okamoto Ippei. He debuted as a western-style painter, and was even selected to participate in the Bunten Exhibition. Later, he became an employee of the Yomiuri Shinbun [Yomiuri Newspaper], where he was responsible for producing cartoons and illustrations. His cartoons gradually grew in popularity, and, from that point on, Koichiro decided to become a nihonga [Japanese-style] painter.

In Taisho 11 [1922] he studied abroad in France, and in Showa 6 [1931] he opened a solo exhibition in Paris.

Koichiro was committed to training Ibaragi Sanpu and his other pupils. He also had a large friendship group which included the top artists, writers and haiku artists of the period, like Yoshikawa Eiji and Akudagawa Ryunosuke.

Perhaps because of his career shift from western-style artist to cartoonist, and then from cartoonist to Japanese-style artist, Koichiro`s style is particularly unique. He became very well-known for this uniqueness, evident in his suiboku-ga [ink-wash paintings], and was also famous for his own prominent independence from strictly defined traditional schools of Japanese painting.
