`Seiryu Chidori` [Painting of a Little Bird by a Clear Stream] by Matsumura Goshun(松村呉春).

`Seiryu Chidori` [Painting of a Little Bird by a Clear Stream] by Matsumura Goshun.

About the artwork:

A bird flies effortlessly above a clear stream.
Although the species of bird is not identified, the bird`s form in flight may remind the viewer of a bird from a chidori-zu [painting of a plover or small bird].

Goshun decisively controls the thickness of the ink, and paints the trees, rocks, waves, and even the feathers of the bird, separately. His artistic sense is evident in his use of space at the top and bottom of the artwork, and by the fact that the viewer can feel through his brush-strokes the brightness of the sky and the clear brilliance of the face of the water.

This artwork, which makes the viewer feel cool as if they were beside a clear stream, is most suitable to being displayed in summer.

About the artist:

Goshun was an apprentice of Yosa Buson. His life can be split into two main periods: when he was apprenticed to Yosa Buson and painted haiga [`haiku pictures`] and Southern School style paintings, and then when he studied the Maruyama School style and painted from life. After Maruyama Okyo`s death Goshun became the centre of the Kyoto art circle.

Apart from paintings and calligraphic works, Goshun is also said to have been skilled at kemari (a soccer-like sport played by courtiers in ancient Japan) and playing the transverse flute.

。Because the mounting uses an antique (probably Meiji period) fabric at the top, bottom, and around the middle, it matches well with the artwork`s paper. One may assume that, especially in the case of the fabric circling the artwork, these fabrics were chosen with the image of a clear stream in mind.
